What Your Child Will Learn with Alex

As an experienced Year 9 Mathematics tutor, Alex strictly adheres to the official Victorian Curriculum. She ensures students master all required areas and meet the achievement standards set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Here's what students will cover throughout the year:

Number and Algebra Skills

Alex will guide students through applying index laws with integer indices to numerical and algebraic expressions. Students will learn to express very large and very small numbers in scientific notation and solve problems involving direct proportion. Financial mathematics skills, including solving problems with simple interest, will prepare students for real-world applications.

Algebraic Development

Students will extend their algebraic skills by applying the distributive law to expand algebraic expressions, including binomials, and collect like terms. Alex will help them understand the relationship between expansion and factorisation while identifying algebraic factors in expressions. Students will also apply set structures to solve real-world problems.

Linear and Non-Linear Relations

Alex will teach students how to find the distance between points on a Cartesian plane, determine midpoints and gradients of line segments, and sketch linear graphs. Students will learn to graph simple non-linear relations and solve related equations, connecting the graphical and symbolic forms of these mathematical concepts.

Measurement and Geometry

Students will solve measurement problems involving perimeter and area of composite shapes, surface area, and volume of rectangular prisms and cylinders. Alex will help them relate three-dimensional objects to two-dimensional representations, explain similarity of triangles, interpret ratios and scale factors, and apply Pythagoras's theorem and trigonometry to solve right-angled triangle problems.

Statistics and Probability

Alex will guide students in comparing techniques for collecting data from various sources and identifying questions involving different data types. Students will learn to construct histograms and stem-and-leaf plots, identify mean and median in various data displays, calculate relative frequencies to estimate probabilities, and list outcomes for two-step experiments.
